Empowering policymaking with data-driven insights for methane reduction

Government policy and action

The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a strategic partner for governments committed to reducing methane emissions. Through Eye on Methane, IMEO combines satellite observations, scientific studies and verified company data to deliver reliable insights that support effective policy and action. IMEO notifies companies and governments, through designated national focal points, of large methane emissions.

Why partner with IMEO?

Policymakers and regulators face the critical challenge of balancing long-term energy needs with the urgency of reducing methane emissions. Eye on Methane provides the tools to help inform policy, demonstrate progress and accelerate action towards achieving the Global Methane Pledge, of which IMEO is a core implementing partner.
By addressing the problem of fragmented and limited data, IMEO offers an integrated toolbox for effective decision-making.
Verified, transparent data
Through public-private partnerships and advanced technology, Eye on Methane delivers rigorously validated information, offering a scientifically sound foundation for analysis and strategic planning. Rather than relying solely on estimates, the platform provides measured emissions data, with a transparent methodology that builds trust among stakeholders.
Bridging ambition and reality
Governments can monitor the companies they source from, as well as their own national operations, and demonstrate progress on the Global Methane Pledge. Data can be used to shape effective regulations and direct investments towards impactful methane reduction strategies.
Fueling action with insights
Eye on Methane turns complex data into compelling visualizations, supporting informed policy decisions. Governments can compare national performance against peers and track progress over time to communicate results clearly to stakeholders.

Building confidence through data

IMEO's methodology combines a variety of approaches to measurement, delivering robust evidence on methane emissions.
  • Through satellite observations and airborne measurements, IMEO teams detect and quantify large emission sources to support policymaking, linking detected plumes to specific regions or countries.
  • Eye on Methane brings together company reporting (including the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0) and on-the-ground scientific studies, building a detailed picture of emissions at the facility level.

By combining these complementary approaches, IMEO delivers more accurate assessments that enable targeted action and greater impact. Governments can monitor developments within their jurisdiction and compare progress with other countries and regions.

Turning data into results

Translate ambition into measurable progress. Through a secure central hub, MARS data on satellite-detected methane emissions allow governments to quickly identify and mitigate emissions within their country, helping them meet their national climate commitments.
