How to use the data

Terms of data use

The Eye on Methane is a data platform created, developed and maintained by the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) to support environmental decision-making by transforming data into actionable information. All intellectual property rights for the Eye on Methane data platform, including its design, functionality and content, belong to UNEP unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Data usage

IMEO brings together policy-relevant, transparent and reliable methane emissions data from various sources and across multiple sectors. IMEO collects and integrates data through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), from its series of global methane science studies and from national emissions inventories. It also uses publicly available databases across sectors. Please refer to the data platform’s webpage on approach and methodology for more information.

Data are shared under a Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 (Share — Adapt — Attribute) license. This means that data can be shared and adapted freely, provided that credit is attributed to UNEP’s IMEO by providing a link to the Eye on Methane data platform and indicating whether any changes were made.

User responsibilities

To the fullest extent permitted by law, UNEP is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from the use of the Eye on Methane data towards third-party products or domains. UNEP assumes no responsibility or liability in this regard.

No link(s) may appear on any page on your website/application or within any context containing content or materials that may be interpreted as libelous, obscene or criminal, or which infringes, otherwise violates, or advocates the infringement or other violation of, any third-party rights.

As a user of the Eye on Methane data platform, you acknowledge and agree that UNEP is not liable for any conduct of any user. Furthermore,  you agree to indemnify UNEP from and against any and all actions, claims, losses, damages, liabilities and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of your use of the Eye on Methane data platform, including, without limitation, any claims alleging facts that, if true, would constitute a breach of these terms of use. If you are dissatisfied with any material on this data platform or with any of its terms of use, your sole and exclusive remedy is to discontinue using the data platform.

By accessing and using the Eye on Methane data platform, you agree to comply with these terms of use.
